Especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the new <strong data-start=\"582\" data-end=\"599\"><a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/the-vsme-standard-why-it-is-gaining-in-importance\/\">VSME<\/a> standard<\/strong> offers a practical way to voluntarily submit structured sustainability reports. <span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">However, anyone who wants to successfully manage sustainability in the long term needs more than a good report: they need an effective <\/span><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\" data-start=\"816\" data-end=\"836\">management system<\/strong> <span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">. This is where the new international standard  <\/span><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\" data-start=\"882\" data-end=\"895\">ISO 53001<\/strong><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">  &#8216;Management of UN Sustainable Development Goals&#8217; comes into play. The planned standard aims to provide companies worldwide with a framework to manage their contributions to the   <\/span><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\" data-start=\"989\" data-end=\"1024\">UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"> systematically \u2013 regardless of existing reporting formats.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1461\">In this article, we show what distinguishes ISO 53001, when it will be released, and how it can strategically help companies meet the requirements of <a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/create-a-materiality-analysis-according-to-csrd-in-4-steps\/\"><strong data-start=\"1250\" data-end=\"1258\">CSRD<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/nachhaltigkeitsbericht-template-fuer-kmus\/\"><strong data-start=\"1263\" data-end=\"1271\">VSME<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a8e528f e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"a8e528f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-255db65 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"255db65\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1 What is ISO 53001?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bbbfcf1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bbbfcf1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong data-start=\"137\" data-end=\"150\">ISO 53001<\/strong> is a new management system standard currently under development and expected to be published in 2025 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dgq.de\/aktuelles\/neue-iso-norm-53001-fuer-das-management-von-un-nachhaltigkeitszielen\/#:~:text=Mit%20der%20internationalen%20Norm%20will,nicht%20grunds%C3%A4tzlich%20alle%2017%20Nachhaltigkeitsziele\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see German Society for Quality<\/a>). Its goal: to offer companies worldwide a structured framework to systematically plan, implement, and improve their contribution to the <strong data-start=\"378\" data-end=\"444\">UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong>. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-14d76f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"14d76f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A management system for sustainability<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-704b137 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"704b137\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"500\" data-end=\"855\">Unlike traditional <strong data-start=\"528\" data-end=\"556\">sustainability reports<\/strong>, such as those prepared under <a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/csrd-reporting-materiality-analysis-and-then\/\"><strong data-start=\"585\" data-end=\"593\">CSRD<\/strong><\/a> or voluntarily according to the <strong data-start=\"619\" data-end=\"636\"><a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/the-vsme-standard-why-it-is-gaining-in-importance\/\">VSME standard<\/a><\/strong>, ISO 53001 focuses <strong data-start=\"670\" data-end=\"725\">on internal control rather than mere reporting<\/strong>. The standard defines requirements for a so-called <strong data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"798\">SDG management system<\/strong> \u2013 a comprehensive system that enables companies to: <\/p><ul><li>identify relevant sustainability goals<\/li><li>develop strategic measures,<\/li><li>Measure and evaluate progress,<\/li><li>and continuously improve their processes.<\/li><\/ul><p>Companies specifically select the SDGs that are particularly relevant to their own operations. The aim is not to cover all 17 goals simultaneously, but to integrate sustainability purposefully and effectively into their own corporate strategy. When identifying the relevance of topics, conducting a <a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/create-a-materiality-analysis-according-to-csrd-in-4-steps\/\">double Materiality Assessment<\/a> can be helpful.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c11fa9c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c11fa9c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Certification as objective proof<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-04e84de elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"04e84de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Particularly important: <strong data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1367\">ISO 53001 will be certifiable<\/strong> &#8211; similar to established management standards such as ISO 9001 (quality management) or ISO 14001 (environmental management). In future, companies will therefore be able to obtain official certification that they operate an effective sustainability management system in relation to the UN goals. The standard thus provides <strong data-start=\"1665\" data-end=\"1688\">objective proof<\/strong> of sustainable business practices &#8211; an increasingly important factor in the competition for customers, talent and investment.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9870bfa e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9870bfa\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d368d79 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d368d79\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2 The state of development: When is ISO 53001 coming?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-602e0e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"602e0e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\" data-start=\"290\" data-end=\"652\"><strong data-start=\"294\" data-end=\"307\">ISO 53001<\/strong> is currently still in the development phase. The specially established <strong data-start=\"422\" data-end=\"455\">ISO project committee ISO\/PC 343<\/strong> is responsible for its development. Since 2023, this international committee of experts has been working on developing the new standard for sustainability management in line with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"637\">UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong><\/a> to develop.  <\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"654\" data-end=\"1060\">The standard is currently (as of spring 2025) available as a <strong data-start=\"703\" data-end=\"720\">working draft<\/strong>. This draft is first agreed internally and then further developed in several phases &#8211; including as a <strong data-start=\"863\" data-end=\"887\">Committee Draft (CD)<\/strong> and later as a <strong data-start=\"903\" data-end=\"941\">Draft International Standard (DIS)<\/strong>. Final publication only takes place after worldwide public consultation and a final vote.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1cbda55 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1cbda55\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Planned timeframe: Publication in fall 2025<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-797dc76 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"797dc76\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1456\">According to current information, the International Organization for Standardization (<strong data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1199\">ISO<\/strong>) plans to publish the final version in <strong data-start=\"1246\" data-end=\"1261\">autumn 2025<\/strong>. Companies that wish to focus on strategic sustainability management early on can therefore prepare now and monitor the development process. <\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1458\" data-end=\"1687\">Especially in the context of new legal requirements such as the <strong data-start=\"1517\" data-end=\"1525\"><a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/corporate-sustainability-reporting-directive-csrd-explained-simply\/\">CSRD<\/a><\/strong> or the voluntary standard for the <a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/vsme-sustainability-report-mapping-the-material-esrs-topics\/\"><b>VSME Sustainability Report<\/b><\/a>, it can be beneficial to address the topic in good time to leverage synergies.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9dfad5d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9dfad5d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">PAS 53002: The precursor to ISO 53001<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f044b62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f044b62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>An important basis for ISO 53001 is the already published <strong data-start=\"315\" data-end=\"333\">PAS 53002:2024<\/strong> \u2013 a preliminary specification developed by ISO together with the United Nations Development Programme (<strong data-start=\"446\" data-end=\"454\">UNDP<\/strong>). PAS 53002 provides initial guidelines on how organizations can systematically contribute to the <strong data-start=\"548\" data-end=\"591\">UN Sustainable Development Goals<\/strong> and serves as content preparation for the later standard. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-621ed9c e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"621ed9c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d26a31 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3d26a31\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3. ISO 53001, CSRD and VSME - How do they all fit together?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c990b7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4c990b7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Different priorities: Management system versus reporting obligations<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ce37ad2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ce37ad2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\" data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"963\">In the context of growing demands on <strong data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"812\"><a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/csrd-reporting-materiality-analysis-and-then\/\">sustainability reporting<\/a><\/strong>, many companies ask themselves: How does the new <strong data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"891\">ISO 53001<\/strong> fit into the landscape of standards like <strong data-start=\"932\" data-end=\"940\">CSRD<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"958\">VSME<\/strong>?<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"965\" data-end=\"1227\">The answer is clear: <strong data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1062\">ISO 53001 supplements existing reporting obligations &#8211; it does not replace them. <\/strong>This is because ISO 53001 <strong data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1132\">focuses on the introduction of a management system<\/strong>, while CSRD and VSME are aimed at the <strong data-start=\"1164\" data-end=\"1217\">creation of structured sustainability reports<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1485\"><strong data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1237\">CSRD<\/strong> obliges large companies and certain SMEs to disclose numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/esrs-data-point-mapping-7-essential-tips-insights\/\">ESRS data points<\/a>. <strong data-start=\"1325\" data-end=\"1333\">VSME<\/strong> offers small companies a voluntary option to report sustainability information efficiently and in a standardized manner (see <a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/vsme-data-point-list\/\">VSME data points list<\/a>). <strong data-start=\"1487\" data-end=\"1500\">ISO 53001<\/strong>, on the other hand, supports companies in building the underlying <strong data-start=\"1564\" data-end=\"1591\">processes and structures<\/strong> to effectively manage sustainability and achieve real progress.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f88b739 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f88b739\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">ISO 53001 as strategic support for reporting requirements<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df7684b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"df7684b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1749\" data-end=\"1998\">Especially under the CSRD, companies will in the future not only have to state <strong data-start=\"1821\" data-end=\"1828\">what<\/strong> they do, but also <strong data-start=\"1851\" data-end=\"1858\">how<\/strong> they integrate sustainability into their governance and strategy. Here, a certified SDG management system can: <\/p><ul><li>demonstrate the strategic anchoring of sustainability goals,<\/li><li>document structured processes for managing risks and opportunities,<\/li><li>and provide reliable data for reporting in accordance with CSRD or VSME.<\/li><\/ul><p>ISO 53001 can also be a valuable tool for SMEs that voluntarily adhere to the <strong data-start=\"2265\" data-end=\"2282\">VSME standard<\/strong> in order to establish internal management processes and thus report more credibly and sustainably.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2228\" data-end=\"2440\">Note: In addition to ISO 53001, <a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/how-iso-certifications-facilitate-compliance-with-the-esrs-csrd\/\">other ISO certifications also facilitate compliance with ESRS \/ CSRD<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e33588e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e33588e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Conclusion: ISO 53001 as the missing link between requirements and implementation<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-581b5ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"581b5ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2520\" data-end=\"2809\">Whether mandatory reporting according to the comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/csr-tools.com\/en\/blog-en\/the-most-important-facts-about-esrs-european-sustainability-reporting-standards\/\">European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS)<\/a> or voluntary disclosure according to VSME: <strong data-start=\"2608\" data-end=\"2651\">Effective sustainability management<\/strong> is becoming increasingly important not only to meet rising demands but also to make truly substantial contributions to sustainable development.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2811\" data-end=\"3031\"><strong data-start=\"2811\" data-end=\"2824\">ISO 53001<\/strong> offers a decisive advantage here: Companies not only manage their sustainability goals more efficiently internally but also create a reliable basis for credible and comparable reports.
